The foundation established training programs for both modern and traditional medical practitioners, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing between the two systems of medicine.
Founded in 2001 by Dr. C. N. Deivanayagam, Health India Foundation has been a pioneer in integrating Siddha and modern medicine to provide holistic healthcare solutions. With over 23 years of successful operation, the foundation has contributed significantly to rural healthcare initiatives, wellness promotion, and medical education.
Dr. Deivanayagam’s journey in medicine began with his undergraduate studies at Chennai Medical College, where he completed his MBBS in 1964. His commitment to medical excellence led him to pursue further studies at the prestigious Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he earned his MRCP, a highly respected postgraduate qualification.
After completing his education, Dr. Deivanayagam returned to his alma mater, Chennai Medical College, where he served as both Assistant Professor and later as a Professor. During his tenure, he was instrumental in shaping the medical curriculum and training future generations of doctors. His deep expertise and passion for medicine made him a well-respected educator in the field.
Establishment of Health India Foundation:
Upon his retirement in 2000, Dr. Deivanayagam founded the Health India Foundation in 2001. At the foundation’s hospital, he introduced integrative medicine for all ailments, where both modern and Siddha doctors collaborate to provide comprehensive patient care. To Dr. Deivanayagam, this represents true integration—offering cost-effective, side-effect-free, and potent medical solutions to the community.
Vision for Integrated Medicine:
Dr. Deivanayagam believes that proper integrated medicine requires advancements in the current educational system. Modern medical practitioners should gain knowledge of traditional medicine, while traditional medical practitioners should understand modern medical science’s techniques. Practitioners must deeply understand the strengths and limitations of their respective fields and learn from the other to improve patient care. They should operate within their expertise and collaborate with specialists to ensure comprehensive treatment. The ultimate goal of integrated medicine is to address challenging diseases within the community, providing lasting solutions and preventing recurrence. The focus should shift from merely curing diseases to enhancing patients’ overall well-being on multiple levels.
In 1989, Dr. Deivanayagam became Principal at Ramachandra Medical College.
In 1992, he became Chief Medical Officer at Tambaram Government Hospital for Chest Diseases.
He observed a high number of HIV patients and pioneered integrating Siddha and modern medicine.
His approach saved the lives of around 60,000 patients before ART medications were available.
Dr. Deivanayagam expanded his interest in applying integrative medicine to other diseases.
